Register and PREPARE to Vote in Your State via @RocktheVote

It’s hard to believe the election is only month away. It seems like only five or six years ago that we started talking about it when, in fact, it’s been much longer than that. But this election is unprecedented in more ways than the rise of the GOP’s pure id running as their candidate.

This year, 17 states have either cut back on early voting, cut day-of registration, passed voter ID laws and/or found other ways to suppress the votes of the disenfranchised, students, the elderly, immigrants and more. Like in Wisconsin, where the state is violating multiple court orders by not providing eligible citizens with free IDs or certificates for voting, and in Indiana where it is now lawful for party-nominated officers to demand further proof of identification from voters.

So it’s going to be a jungle out there no matter what, but what you can do is be prepared and make sure everyone you know is prepared to vote. Head over to the very famous and now venerable RocktheVote.com. There you can register to vote or confirm that you are registered - this is especially important if you’ve recently moved - and spend some time getting to know the current voter ID laws in your state. Rock the Vote has actually partnered VoteRiders, the organization we just heard about, to provide accurate and detailed information about each state’s current voter ID laws. Or, you can go directly to VoteRiders.org.

And remember, if you run into any problems while registering or voting in your state, call Election Protection at 866-OUR-VOTE - that’s 866-687-8683 - or go to 866ourvote.org to report the incident.

When it comes to voter suppression, we cannot afford to be complacent in the off-season. So make voting accessibility and restoring our democracy part of your theory of change by getting involved in the long term with organizations like VoteRiders, Democracy Awakening, the ACLU, the Brennan Center for Justice, Project Vote, the Legal Defense Fund and other organizations fighting to restore the Voting Rights Act and make sure everyone has a voice at the ballot.

So if making sure everyone can cast their ballot this November is important to you, then be sure to hit the share buttons to spread the word about registering and preparing to vote in your state via social media so that others in your network can take action too.
