Regarding health care and other benefits via employers being the “American way” … I heard that this mentality stemmed from Sloan at GM countering the move by unions to offer pensions and other benefits. He realized the loyalty dynamic – and reduced unionization incentive – that would come from companies offering these benefits directly.
