I was so moved by Ep #902, that halfway through I bought Johann Hari’s Catching the Scream. It’s such an incredible look at ‘The War on Drugs’, offering hope, and possible practical solutions to the almost insurmountable issue of addiction.
A great point by Chris from Colorado Springs: Ep #903, messages Re: the Carl Hart, speaking on Meth, Aderol, & teeth; I believe Dr Hart’s Chemical knowledge is limited in relation to these subjects. He’s obviously not a Chemist. No one with a working knowledge of Chemistry would believe the comparison “one methyl group difference b/w Aderol and Methamphetamine…” to be a helpful example, or accurate way to explain how one substance differs from another.
For example, another comparison is: water and hydrogen peroxide is only one Oxygen different. H2O compared with H2O2 . [The 2s are subscript in all cases.]
Water is a clear, odourless liquid, with a pH of 7, that’s essential for our health. Hydrogen Peroxide is a clear, liquid, with a pH of about 6.2, and will make one very ill if drunk; burning the oesophagus on the way down. That’s the difference just ONE Oxygen molecule makes; Yet Dr Hart was talking of a whole Methyl Group… [ CH3 ] (The 3 being subscript.)
I also agree with Chris about the damage to teeth. Dr Hart believed that meth mouth doesn’t exist. This didn’t sit right with Chris, nor me, either. I’ve suffered from Chronic Pain after having surgery for Ulcerative Colitis 13 years ago. I’m prescribed high doses of narcotic painkillers by a Pain Specialist Doctor, & because I can’t swallow tablets, I have to chew (I know) more than 40 tablets (mainly painkillers) everyday. So it’s little wonder that I too, have had severe problems with my teeth. I’m in the process of having thousands of AU$s of dentistry done , including teeth removed & nearly each remaining tooth being filled. Drugs and medications directly and indirectly negatively affect one’s teeth.
Thankyou for your amazing and educational show. I learn something every episode, whilst becoming a more empathetic person and a better member of my society.
Kindest Regards,
Kitty
