#845 Another reason why we need single payer (Hobby Lobby)

Today we take a look at the Hobby Lobby ruling from the Supreme Court. Just as with money in politics, I'm pretty sure they're just trying to make the status quo so outrageously bad that we have no choice but to fundamentally change the system

This episode inspired me to do a little 8 minute ramble myself. It’s not journalism, but silliness based on the Supreme Court’s fuzzy logic. http://whatcouldgowrongpodcast.com/?p=3026

Hey! Recent fan of the show here.

I have a little quibble with the coverage of the Hobby Lobby case though. I don’t think it’s fair to question the sincerity of the Hobby Lobby owners’ beliefs on the grounds that they have expressed ideological inconstancy. Hypocrisy is common to all belief systems. For example, I am a vegetarian, but I enjoy wearing leather shoes. Does that de-legitimize my belief that it’s wrong to kill animals for their meat? It makes me a hypocrite, yes, but it doesn’t mean that I am not sincere in my beliefs. Similarly, Hobby Lobby’s owners may sincerely hold beliefs that they violate in other areas of their lives (and business). We shouldn’t demand ideological purity as proof of legitimacy.

It’s a very good thing that we give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to religious beliefs. That said, there’s no reason why we need to respect every religious belief simply because it is sincere. As this episode demonstrates there are dozens of reasons why the Hobby Lobby decision was a poor one, beyond questioning the nature of the owner’s beliefs.
