I worked at a WA state juvenile detention center for 7 years and after voicing my opinion to my co-workers and supervisors that it was offensive to hear bible-study volunteers telling kids they are going to hell, things got tough. At a certain point, after saying it was personally offensive to me, some people DID ask, “why does that bother you (i.e., are you gay)?” At that point it seemed ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS: here the authorities had trained us not to talk about stuff with the kids that could be potentially inappropriate, or a privacy violation, then when I voice my opinion I’m asked a question about my privacy?
