#1004 Understanding the 2016 election conservative wedge issue (Trans Rights)

Air Date: 04-05-2016

Direct Download

Today we take a look at the hate-mongering conservative fright fest issue du jour, trans people being allowed to use public restrooms without harassment. Ignorance leads to fear, fear leads to hate and ignorance, fear and hatred lead to voting for Republicans. That’s been their strategy for decades: exploiting fear of black people, brown people, drugs, gay people and now trans people. They’re always wrong about what they fear but that’s never stopped them before and it isn’t stopping them now.

This red herring argument that cis-women will be assaulted because we made restrooms more inclusive annoys and upsets me every time I hear it. Because of the simple fact that this is a biological need that everyone must meet, no matter how their outward appearance is presented to the world, I agree that this is an insidious way to control movement and restrict the ability of all people to become full members of the public. Consider the ways that Jim Crow laws and segregated bathrooms served the same purpose, or how only providing public restrooms for men only in Victorian England. When are the people in this country going to learn?!!

Expanding protections of civil rights to trans people is NOT in direct conflict with issues of safety from sexual violence. Misogyny IS.

Since your recent file format change in iTunes — from: PROFILE = Low Complexity and ENCODED WITH = GarageBand 6.0.5 — to: PROFILE = High Efficiency and ENCODED WITH = auphonic.com — I’m unable to play Best of the Left Podcasts on my iPod Shuffle (4G). They play normally within the iTunes application, but will not play offline on the iPod. I suspect this is a problem with the new file format, since your earlier Podcasts (2016/03/25 and earlier) still play normally offline on my Shuffle.
